An entire community can benefit from our programs for generations. By giving women the means to just by helping one woman business owner.
Faced with a rapidly growing population, recurring droughts, and looming environmental crises, it is increasingly difficult for African women in remote villages to fight hunger and feed their families. Through our holistic programs, we work within a community’s culture to give women a chance to become earners, so they can make ripples of change by investing in schools, medical centers, and other essential services. We help these women revitalize their local economies so they can provide opportunities for their children.
Unpacking the Problem in Sub-Saharan Africa
High Poverty Rates
42.3% of Sub-Saharan Africa (419.3 million people) lives on less than $1.90/day.
In 2016, 70 percent of youth were in jobs characterized as working poverty.
Hunger
239.1 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa were undernourished in 2018. Africa has the second largest number of undernourished people, after Asia. 22.8% of the population of Sub-Saharan Africa is undernourished, the highest prevalence of all regions in the world.
Lack of Jobs
9 out of 10 workers in both rural and urban areas hold only informal jobs, leaving the majority of the population living from hand to mouth. In sub-Saharan Africa, poor-quality employment, rather than unemployment, is the main labour market challenge. This problem is compounded by rapid working-age population growth.
The Ripples Approach
The Ripples Approach recognizes that for programs to be sustainable, they must be co-created with each African community in collaboration with local governing bodies. We meet with women leaders in African communities in order to develop a plan that will benefit them the most. Our goal is to build a new generation of women who educate their children and create employment opportunities for the youth in their community.
Stakeholder Farming
Ripples Farms delivers technical assistance for African women to run and control their farms. We help empower women leaders to take control of their future and break the cycle of poverty by introducing business acumen and sustainable farming practices that revitalize local economies and overcome environmental challenges.
